TRANSLATOR ENCODER REGISTER

APPLICATIONS: The Hersey ® Translator Encoder Register is available on all current model Hersey meters for use in Automatic Meter Reading Systems (AMR). The register allows accurate readings to be obtained conveniently from residential, commercial and industrial meter installations in hard to access locations. Using the Translator Encoder Register with an AMR system can increase the efficiency and accuracy of the meter reading process. The register is a true absolute encoder register that provides direct electronic transfer of meter reading information from a current Hersey meter to any of a number of AMR device options. The register sends data in ASCII format (American Standard code for Information Interchange), a standard format used by virtually all modern computers and communications devices. The Translator Encoder Register uses the same open architecture variable length protocol in ASCII format as is used by other commonly used encoder registers. The register is available for meter sets installed indoors with a run of wire up to 300 feet to an outside wall mounted touch pad. For pit applications, the Translator Encoder Register is factory wired and potted to provide reliability in moist conditions. With minimal cost and labor, the Translator Encoder Register can be retrofitted to current Hersey meters already in service.

CONFORMANCE TO STANDARDS: Complies with AWWA Standard C707 for Encoder Remote Reading Systems, American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII).

CONSTRUCTION: The Translator Encoder Register is permanently sealed to exclude dirt and/or moisture infiltration. The register has a straight reading odometer type display, and 360º test circle with center sweep hand and low flow (leak) detector. A tamper proof locking feature is provided to resist tampering with the register. For pit applications, the wire assembly is factory potted for moisture resistance.

OPERATION: The Hersey Translator Encoder Register uses an absolute encoder to directly read the actual position of the index odometer wheels, when interrogated by a reading device (Touch Probe, Radio MIU or Telephone MIU). The reading device provides all necessary power. There are no pulse outputs or memory modules to program and the register has no battery. When an AMR device interrogates the register, the translator en-coder communications to the device in ASCII computer language the absolute meter reading, and an eight digit identification number. Any error or nonread is immediately indicated by the meter reading equipment, providing virtually error free reading. All Translator Encoder Registers are standard with full 6 wheel encoding, and have a 6 wheel odometer assembly for direct manual reading. The electronically collected data will depend upon the particular requirements of the utility. Utilities billing in common units, such as thousands of gallons or hundreds of cubic feet, are able to use the electronic meter readings without performing in termediate calculations. This can be done by specifying 4, 5, or 6 wheel encoding Translator Encoder Registers.
